Everyone (well, almost everyone) loves their first car. The Peugeot was mine, and this was no exception to the case.
The Peugeot handled beautifully, and was a great zippy little motor for running about town and to work (around 25 miles each way). I lobbed a couple of TSW alloys on it to make it look a lot better and even got a quasi-bucket seat from a dismantled XSi for the drivers seat to add to the driveability.
I still seriously miss this car and I thought it was the perfect example of a 306. The rear spoiler was an authentic Peugeot one, which looked just right for the curvy body. The side panels on this car especially were very aesthetically pleasing, much more so than newer generation Peugeots where this has all been lost in the quest for safety.
As for the engine, this was the same XU (I think) type as was in many a Citroen Saxo, and 106. For the size of the 306, it was underpowered and really didn't do much out of third, but certainly enough in it to serve as a fun first car. The handling as said, especially after fitting alloys was the best thing about this, making it a real drivers car. Great on country roads and tight corners. The lack of ABS, power steering and air bags made the car less safe, but you really felt like you were in control!
Services cost around £ 150 and running costs were reasonable. I had a fairly minor knock in it in May 2003 which sent the insurance through the roof so I had to sell. I always regret the day the peugeot key-fob passed hands to a pimply-faced Escort-driving 17-year old in Dunbar for a measly £ 1200. Seriously underpriced - blame my mother!
Things to look out for after 70,000 miles (I had to fix 'em!):
Nearside CV Boot
Failing Window Washer Jets
Suspension Links
Fuel Injector Unit
